EPRDF is to blame for crisis in Oromia: Hailemariam Desalegn
March 11, 2016
Failure to address the people's demands has resulted in the ongoing crisis in Oromia and other regions, and "we are to blame for that," Hailemariam bluntly told his parliament, much to the chagrin of the TPLF officials known for their resistance to any change whatsoever.
The prime minister's move is unprecedented in a country where his predecessor, the late Meles Zenawi, ruled by dictating the entire parliament that everything was rosy, including the economy that was galloping at an annual 11 percent growth. Meles never talked about failing the people, which makes his current successor a different breed.
In November last year, Hailemariam made the same plea for change but was told "How dare you!?" by none other than Debretsion Gebremichael, a TPLF spy master in charge of communications. Since then, various public protests have erupted like mushrooms everywhere, beginning with the massive, five-month-old uprising in Oromia, followed by in Gonder, and most southern parts like Konso and Gambella, not to mention the decades-long Ogaden debacle.
The question now is, "Will Hailemariam overcome TPLF challenges and succeed in his reform, or will be removed by TPLF because he - as usual - submitted a resignation letter for health reasons?"
Time will tell.
