Press Release
Nov 27, 2003
OSLO, Norway - Ethiopians living in Norway have established a seven-man committee that would organize contributions and support for the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF), an umbrella group of 15 opposition parties that have united to remove Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's regime in internationally-monitored democratic elections in 2005.

"The committee of seven Ethiopians was formed in Oslo city following an exciting and lengthy discussion on Novemeber 8, 2003," the UEDF-Norway Support Group's press release to Ethiomedia disclosed today.

Accordingly, the elected Norway-UEDF Support Committee leaders are:

  1. Walelign Mengist - Chairman
  2. Girmai Berhe - Secretary
  3. Abdurazak Kemal - Treasurer
  4. Kassahun Alemayehu - Member
  5. Berhanu Denku - Member
  6. Melkamu Degeno - Member
  7. Asayehegn Tilahun - Member

The Norway UEDF Support Committee of Ethiopians is among the latest force UEDF has enjoyed following its founding congress in Washington DC in August 2003. Numerous UEDF support groups sprang up throughout North America and Europe, as well as in the western Australian city of Perth.

The Ethiopian people have pinned their hopes on UEDF to bring to an end the 12-year-old reign of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's EPRDF ruling party, which despite official rhetoric, has adopted policies that have seriously compromised the fundamental democratic rights of the people as well as the sovereign powers of the country.
