The fact that this crime was committed under the watch of the
TPLF
regime makes the regime no less responsible. This tragedy is a
continuation of
massacres and killings instigated by the wrong-headed ethnic policies
of the
regime that is terminally pitting one ethnic group against another.
As the Ethiopian people and the international community, at large,
know, the
recent crime committed against the Anuak people is just another act of
genocide
by the TPLF/EPRDF regime against our people in the name of democracy.
On December 13, 2003, the regime's army has indiscriminately mowed down
civilians, women, children, and elders of Anuak in Gambella region with
a
pretext that they had been involved in killing incident of UN officials
in the
area. Reliable sources have reported that the number of people killed
in this
massacre estimated to reach more than two hundred. The area is now
under the
state of emergency. It is absolutely impossible to reach out there and
provide
any emergency assistance to the needy at this time.
Such kind of barbaric acts of the regime in power have been well
documented and
registered, as they have occurred in the past. Similar acts of
massacres have
been committed against the peaceful civilians in Arba Gugue, Areka
Water,
Adebabay Yesus in Gondar, at Anwar mosque in Addis Ababa and else where
EPRP strongly condemns this brutal and treacherous acts of genocide
against
the Anuak people in Gambella region by the regime in power. EPRP would
also
like to call upon all peace loving people, democratic and humanitarian
organizations both at home and abroad to condemn this brutal and
barbarous act
of this dictatorial regime in Ethiopia.
EPRP believes that the regime in Addis Ababa was totally behind and
master
minded the whole operation of these acts of genocide. The Ethiopian
people hold
the regime in power responsible for the massacre of the innocent people
of our
fellow citizens, the Anuaks people in Gambella region. EPRP also
demands that
those responsible for this heinous crime be held accountable and
brought to
justice.
EPRP has time and again expressed its concern to the Ethiopian people
and to
the international community at large that unless we Ethiopians rise up
in
unison and challenge this regime and strive to bring about democratic
alternative, more horrific and senseless acts will continue in greater
frenzy
by this narrow nationalist regime in Addis Ababa.
Finally, EPRP would like to take this opportunity, to express its
profound
sorrow and extends its condolences to the family of the victims in
Gambella. It
also would like to appeal to the international community to extend
their
humanitarian assistance to the families of the victims.
THE DEMOCRATIC STRUGGLE SHALL CONTINUE!
