Government bans Ethiopian free press journalists association (EFJA)

ADDIS ABABA (Nov 10) - The government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi today banned Ethiopia's independent journalists' association. In an urgent dispatch, the Ethiopian Free Press Journalists' Association (EFJA) has sent out the following appeal to all forces of freedom around the world:

The Associations' Registration Office in the Ministry of Justice has, in a letter (Ref. No.11/1333/*-493) sent to EFJA today 10 Nov.2003 (5:30 local time) banned the Ethiopian Free press Journalists' Association (EFJA) from any activities.

The Ethiopian Free press Journalists' Association (EFJA) obtained recognition seven years after its establishment and which has, for the past three years, been performing its tasks under very difficult and challenging conditions.

We call on our international calleagues and allies, civic and professional associations to voice their protest against the action.
