Bahir Dar University today: The move should be held to the right direction

A lot has been the expectation of the people and the government alike from the Bahir Dar University as one of the few newly upgraded institutions of the country. There has, however, been a denial of expectation mainly resulting from the incapability of the management.

The glaring fact witnessed by any concerned citizen is the poor and inefficient leadership of the University. It has been proved in practical terms that both presidents of the University have neither the mental ability and academic qualities nor the social and interpersonal skills to mobilize the University’s community towards scholarly development that inevitably contributes to the development of the country at large. The University has been and is still languishing from a number of problems due to mal-administration. A case in point is the prevailing absence of initiative and commitment reflected mainly on the part of the academic staff.

As has been the case for a number of social and political changes and reforms of the country since the 1960s, the protest recently made by the students of the University seems to have opened a new gate for correcting the mistakes and putting the university in the right track. As “late is better than never”, the measures that are being taken are really praiseworthy. All academic and administrative impurities should be carefully scrutinized and corrected. An institution with a grand objective of producing educated, skilled and responsible citizens should be free from corrupted and immoral individuals who are likely to set bad examples.

What is at stake is however whether the move will be kept on to the right end or not. It must be recalled that the top officials of the University are the only individuals to be held responsible for whatever is going on in the University. If the concerned body is really in need of meaningful changes, the move should be held forward and reach “the heart of the problem” in the presidents’ office. It is only then the University will recover from the chronic academic and administrative sicknesses it has suffered from since its inception.
