LETTER
A message from the author of books on Abraham Hannibal
By Frances Somers Cocks
December 11, 2004
Dear Ethiomedia:

I wonder if I may appeal to your readers? I am the author of two historical novels for children about Abraham Hannibal, the illustrious Ethiopian ancestor of the great Russian poet, Alexander Pushkin: Abraham Hannibal and the Raiders of the Sands, and Abraham Hannibal and the Battle for the Throne, published by the Goldhawk Press. They are available in the UK and in Ethiopia, and on www.amazon.com.co.uk, and will be published in the USA and Canada in 2005. Apart from recounting Abraham's amazing adventures, the books vividly depict the glories of ancient Ethiopia, in particular Gondar and Axum.

Any of your readers who have read and enjoyed these books could boost awareness of them in the UK and elsewhere by emailing the Guardian newspaper. The Guardian is inviting people to email with reviews of their favourite "books of the year", and will publish a report with their recommendations on January 1st. This is what they need to do:

1. Write up to 150 words about why they've chosen the book(s). Mention the full title, the author, and the publisher.

2. Include their postal address and a telephone number or email address in case the Guardian needs to contact them.

3. Email their review to readers.books@guardian.co.uk BY SATURDAY DECEMBER 18TH AT THE LATEST.

With many thanks

Frances Somers Cocks

DEAR FELLOW ETHIOPIANS:

When the books of Frances Somers Cocks rolled out of print, we were wowed by the beauty of the idea of educating and entertaining children around the world through the captivating life-adventures of Abraham Hannibal. The books contain ideas and ideals: Abraham Hannibal, the Ethiopian father of Alexander Pushkin, one of the great literary giants of Russia, the glorious days of Ethiopia in Gondar and Axum; whatelse can a book woven with the threads that stretch from Ethiopia to Russia can accomplish? Those parents whose children have read and enjoyed the books, encouraging them to write to the Guardian that the works of Frances Somers Cocks are their favorites is one way we may be able to honor the author for her superb literary works for young minds. - Ed.
