OSLO, Norway (Sept 4) - A leading Norwegian newspaper, Dagbladet, has sharply criticized the Norwegian Aid and Development Organization (Norad) for sponsoring a human rights course for Ethiopian judges headed by Wubshet Kibru, one of what the newspaper called Ethiopia's "brutal human rights violators."

The Norwegian Teachers Association, through its president, Helga Hjetland, and journalist Solveig Steien regretted that NORAD was involved in financing the trip of what they called a perpetrator of human rights violations in Ethiopia.

Wubshet Kibru arrived in Norway last week, heading a 20-member delegation from the "Ministry of Justice" to attend a course on human rights. Both the teachers association and the newspaper said Wubshet was the judge who sent many innocent Ethiopians to prison, including Dr. Taye Woldesemayat, president of Ethiopian Teachers Association. They alleged that Wubshet sentenced Dr. Taye to 15 years in jail. Dr. Taye was released after enduring 6 years of imprisonment, thanks to joint international human rights and trade union campaigns.

Wubshet said he had no regrets since what he did was right, according to the Norwegian newspaper.
