ADDIS ABABA - Ethiopia's powerful opposition on Saturday temporarily called off a nationwide strike due October 3 after ambassadors, including from the European Union, met with and assured opposition leaders Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was ready to meet with CUD and UEDF leaders for a peaceful resolution of the simmering political unrest in the country.
The urgent meeting, which symbolized how much power the Ethiopian opposition parties wield to force the incumbent government to come to the roundtable, was held at CUD (Kinijit) party headquarters in the Ethiopian capital.
The Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) and United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) warned after the lengthy meeting which ended late Saturday night that the nationwide strike could be activated at any time if the negotiation with the ruling party faltered.
The two sides are expected to meet October 2.
Meanwhile, protest rallies under way in Ethiopian communities around the globe would go ahead as planned, organizers have reported.
