WASHINGTON, DC - On June 27, 2006, H.R. 5680 (formally H.R. 4423), the new bi-partisan Bill Sponsored by Congressman Chris Smith (Republican), and Congressman Donald Payne (Democrat) " Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy, and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006" unanimously passed the Full International Relations Committee and is forwarded to the Full House.
A truly bipartisan bill, the new H.R. 5680, is expected to be presented to the full house for a vote shortly after Congress returns from the summer recess on Labor Day, September 5, 2006. The unanimous vote for " Ethiopia Freedom, Democracy, and Human Rights Advancement Act of 2006" by the Full International Relations Committee is widely believed to be yet another indication that the United States government is adapting the views of the European Union on Ethiopia:
- an accurate understanding of the massive, and systematic crackdown on dissent,
- the repression and infringement of human rights and
- the critical situation of opposition leaders who remain in arbitrary detention.
“The United States House Committee on International Relations unanimous voted today on H.R. 5680 to send it to the full house is an endorsement of the views of Ms. Ana Gomes who is in Washington, DC briefing Congressional leaders and sends a clear message to the Ethiopian Government that the international community is of one voice in demanding compliance with human rights standards and the immediate release of opposition leaders who remain in illegal detention since November 2005”, said Elizabeth Nega, M.D., Founding member of Advocacy Ethiopia and the H.R. 5680 Task Force (sister of Dr. Berhanu Nega, the elected Mayor of Addis Ababa, imprisoned by the Meles Regime since November 2005).
