Norfolk State University Students are rallying around a former professor. The students held a candlelight vigil Tuesday night.

The professor, Yacob Haile-Mariam, is in danger because of his political beliefs. He is imprisoned in Ethiopia.

Haile-Mariam left his teaching position to run for office in Ethiopia and won.

Teigst Alemu and her husband thought the markist rule was a thing of the past.

After he won the seat, newspaper articles wrote about how the old regime lost the power to Yacob's group, Coalition for Unity and Democracy.

The old party started making changes that was seen by some as not being democratic.

In October, the business professor, lawyer, husband and father of two was arrested.

Haile-Mariam and about two dozen other CUD leaders are in jail in Ethiopia's capital.

No one is sure why he is in jail.

Haile-Mariam's family, students and staff at NSU are hoping to catch the attention of the US Government to help Yacob.
