Islamists plan camps for holy war
The militants, who control much of southern Somalia and the capital Mogadishu, oppose foreign interference, including a planned 3,500-strong Ugandan and Sudanese peacekeeping force.
Ethiopia has vowed to defend the Government of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, Somalia’s interim leader, who survived an assassination attempt on Monday. The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said that the car-bombing in Baidoa, the temporary home of the Government, was an attempt “to bring more instability” to the Horn of Africa. Mr Yusuf escaped the assassination attempt but eleven people, including five members of his entourage and his brother, were killed. Somali police have stepped up security patrols in the city. Islamists have blamed outside interference for the attack and singled out Ethiopia, which, some observers say, has sent troops into Somalia to defend the Government. Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, a senior Islamist leader, said: “We’re not promoting violence.” (AP/AFP/Reuters)
