Deacon Begashaw Arrested
May 11, 2006
ADDIS ABABA - Deacon Begashaw Desalegn, the famed Ethiopian Orthodox Church author and song-writer has been arrested, his friends reported. He is known for his spritual songs and lyrics he gave to different spritual singers. He has also published spritual song albums.
Deacon Begashaw is also author of the book: Ye-meskelu sir kumar-tegnoch (its English equivalent being: "The Gamblers on the Good Friday"). In his book, he criticized the Ethiopian orthodox church officials for their wrongdoings. The book includes an open letter to Abune Paulos, Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church, to stop his misdeeds he commits in the name of the Church and called on him to reconcile with the Orthodox faithful.
He also called on the fathers of the church to act according to the Gospel and the spritual order of the church. Many believed that his detention is directly related to the views reflected in his book on Abuna Paulos.
It is to be recalled that the Church had fired its Theology students from their college for condemning the daylight murders committed by the government in June 2005 in Addis Ababa. The students had callled on the Church fathers to condemn the act. Abuna Paulos and his colleagues had also faced a mass protest at the 2005 Holy Cross ceremony in the Ethiopian capital.
