Fekade Shewakena: The Huge Loss of the Voice of Reason

WASHINGTON, DC - Fekade Shewakena, a scholar who over the years made a name for himself as the "Voice of Reason," died on 9 May 2017. The news of his untimely death came as a shock to many Ethiopians who had over the years respected the former Addis Ababa University instructor as a man of reason, unity, peace and reconciliation during his frequent appearances on social media as well as radio, TV and online media. Since he left Ethiopia in the about the mid-'90s when the current regime fired about 42 prominent scholars from Addis Ababa univeristy, Fekade came to the U.S. and spent several years as a research associate for the DC-based Public Health Research Institute. The medical geographer is survived by his three children and wife.
