Here is an audio interview of Emperor Haile Sellasie that took place on May 30th 1954 upon his first visit to the United States. It was during President Eisenhower administration. It is an audio clean file and very clear. King of Ethiopia was interviewed on a CBS show called “Youth Wants to Know” where bright young people invited from all over US, allowed to ask any question that they needed answer. My observation as follows.
The Young people that are asking the questions are bright and well exposed to international events, especially considering that the interview took place 63 years ago. The American youth in the studio were well informed and took a genuine interest to know and learn about a faraway land called Ethiopia. The young people showed an amazing grace and respect for their guest Emperor Haile Sellasie.
The Ethiopian simultaneous interpreter, was simply fantastic. He made no mistake and was very comforting as interpreter, even as the Youth asked question that were not necessarily safe for the Emperor to answer. The question involved US internal policy of segregation. The interpreter was calm and wise , as a result he was able to smooth things out.
The moderator was very intelligent and accommodating to the youth and His Majesty.
As for Emperor Haile Sellasie himself, he was simply marvelous. I appreciated his lighting speed in getting the answers for the questions he was asked. He was forthcoming, precise, honest and transparent. He gave due respect to the country, people and government of the United States. He conveyed the message that his country Ethiopia needs investment, teachers and technology without putting Ethiopia down. As for his stand on foreign policy ,He was clear that he will stand with United Nations against aggression and bullies around the world. He related his proud involvement in the Korean war on the side of United Nations. He represented his country eloquently and fairly.
God Bless His Imperial Majesty Haile Sellasie I.
